Adding GPS functionality with the Android phone you already own is a snap with Open Location.
Open Location links your Android phone and a microcontroller via Bluetooth. Simply enter the coordinate information into Open Location and when you get close to that point a message is sent to your microcontroller via a serial connection over Bluetooth. It will send an 'A' (ASCII 65) if not near the location and an 'B' (ASCII 66) if you are within range.
Here is why you may want to use Open Location: A lot of people are getting into "reverse geocaching" where you give a locked cache to a friend and they have to go to a specific location for the box to "magically" open. This required you to purchase a standalone GPS module, wire it your microcontroller project and do some complex math to determine the distance between the user and the prescribed location. A lot of guys have been doing this when asking their girlfriend to marry them. Put the ring in the "lock box" and have your wife-to-be return to a location that has a special meaning -- such as where they met, had their first date or first kiss.
